Addressing Malnutrition in Adults with Chronic Liver Disease and Transplant: Strategies for Education Success

September 10 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

About the Course

There is a significant gap in knowledge regarding the management of malnutrition in adults with late-stage liver disease and those undergoing liver transplant, particularly in community and rural health settings. While malnutrition is a well-recognized complication in liver disease, its early detection and effective management remain inconsistent across healthcare settings. Many members of the healthcare team, especially those in underserved areas, lack specialized training in assessing and addressing nutritional needs in these complex patient populations. Additionally, there is limited understanding of how to deliver tailored education to patients and their families in rural or community settings, where access to resources like dietitians and liver disease specialists may be scarce.

Moreover, there is insufficient collaboration between interprofessional healthcare teams in these areas, which can lead to fragmented care and missed opportunities for comprehensive nutrition management. This gap in knowledge among healthcare team members and patient education contributes to poorer health outcomes, including increased hospitalizations, delayed recovery post-transplant, and diminished quality of life for patients. Addressing this knowledge gap is critical to improving the overall care and outcomes for individuals affected by advanced liver disease and liver transplantation.
